There is a new club in town! The Sanibel Neighbors Club was formed to give Sanibel residents and those who work on the island the chance to be rewarded for their loyalty to local businesses. The purpose is to support local businesses and provide great benefits to those who live and work on the island. Assorted local businesses are giving members various discounts and freebies. The grand opening of the new spring training complex JetBlue Park at Fenway South will be Saturday, February 25 at 11:30. The ceremony will be followed by an open house where the public can walk freely around the park and enjoy concessions and entertainment. That same day will be the first full squad workout for the 2012 team. Go Sox!

In honor of the 75th Annual Sanibel Shell Fair and Show, the Bailey Matthews Shell Museum is offering visitors free admission next Monday, February 27 from 10AM to 5 PM. They have several new exhibits and lots of interesting displays for all ages. Get out of the sun for a while and check out our great shell museum.

Bank of the Islands has officially opened its new branch on Captiva next to the US Post Office. It is a full service branch offering all banking services including loans and an ATM. Captivans can now bike to the bank instead of driving to Sanibel…a real plus with the seasonal traffic as bad as it is now.

Sanibel Shellabration

The Sanibel Shell Fair and Show will be celebrating it’s 75th anniversary this year. It is the longest running show of ist type in the country. Kudos to Sanibel School

Our on-island school was just rated #1 in the state by the Florida Department of Education. It was the top rated combination school for elementary and middle school students. This is the first time the DOE has posted its best to worst rankings of the 3,078 public schools in the state and the Sanibel School was the only Lee or Collier County school to make the top ten. I’ve always heard it was a great school…now we have official confirmation!

Sanibel Community Association Event

For a small (or large) donation to the Community Center, they will quickly shred your documents while you watch. Much quicker than feeding your little home shredder one at a time! It ‘s a great opportunity to get rid of any old papers with your personal information on them and help out a worthy association.

Sea Turtle Nesting Follow-up

I just read an interesting article from SCCF about last years nesting season. 2011 proved to be the sixth best year for nesting since 1996 on Sanibel and Captiva Islands. In all, Sanibel had a total of 277 nests and Captiva had 75 nests. Although loggerheads are the main type to nest on our islands, this year there was one rare Kemp’s Ridley turtle nest and seven green turtle nests. Overall, the islands produced approximately 25,411 eggs and of those app. 15,786 baby turtles reached the Gulf waters.
